How to Make Your Favorite Indian Style Christmas Sweets
“Muh meetha karo” literally translates to “sweeten your mouth.” However, it is also a metaphor for joining the celebration. With this list of famous Indian Christmas treats, we hope we can enhance your celebration this December! Let’s start with one incredibly popular sweet.
Marzipan or Mass-Pav

While a gingerbread house is a staple in American Christmas, molded marzipan is a staple of Indian Christmas recipes!
But before you can start molding, you need to make the marzipan mass. How do you get to the finished product?
- Grind 2 cups of cashews in rose water until you get a paste
- Sprinkle powdered sugar on your deep dish or vessel
- Beat 4 egg whites to a froth
- Add the cashew paste to 3¼ cups of ground sugar, egg whites, and 2-3 drops of Almond Essence in the vessel
- Stir continuously over a slow flame until you get a waxy mass
Once the mixture is dry, pour it into a plate or thali and create small marzipan balls. Set these aside and sprinkle the molds with powdered sugar. Press the marzipan into the molds until they are in the required shapes. Then take them out and let your delicious, sugary sweet marzipan dry overnight so that you can enjoy it in the morning!
Traditional Christmas Fruit Cake

No list of Indian Christmas recipes is complete without the traditional fruit cake. Whether or not you soak this in rum or brandy, the light or dark fruit cake is what every Indian Christmas needs. We’ll even let you in on a secret – homemade is always better than store-bought! How do you make it?
- Place a large pan with 5 cups of mixed dried fruits, the zest and juice of a lemon and an orange, 150ml of brandy or rum, 1 cup of softened butter, and 1¾ cups of soft brown sugar over a medium flame. Bring this mixture to a boil and then let it simmer for 5 minutes. Pour it into a large bowl and keep it aside to cool for 30 minutes.
- Heat oven to 150C/130C fan/gas 2. Use a double layer of baking parchment to line a deep 8” cake tin. Wrap a double layer of newspaper on the outside and secure it with string.
- Add 1¾ cups plain flour, 1 cup ground almonds, 1 cup flaked almonds, ½ tsp baking powder, 2 tsp mixed spice, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ¼ tsp ground cloves, 4 large eggs, and 1 tsp vanilla extract to the fruit mixture. Mix thoroughly.
- Pour mixture into a cake tin and place it in the oven center for 2 hours or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.
After the cake cools, take it out of the tin, remove the baking paper, and wrap it in saran wrap. Wash it with 1-2tbsp of alcohol every 15 days until you ice it. Do not wash it for a week before icing it.

Another classic of Indian Christmas recipes is the chocolate walnut fudge. This mouth-watering delicacy is present in every sweet shop across the country during December. Here’s how you can make it at home!
- Grind 1 cup of walnuts into powder
- Boil 1 liter of milk over a low flame until it reduces to ½ or 1/3 its original quantity
- Add 1¾ cup of sugar to the reduced milk. Mix until the sugar melts.
- Add 1 tbsp butter, the powdered walnuts, and 3 drops of vanilla essence.
- Add 1 tbsp cocoa powder and stir until fudge leaves the sides of the pan.
This fudge is the ideal treat to make your Christmas day a little sweeter!

Tracing their origins to the Portuguese, these Indian style Christmas sweets are sugary pockets of joy. They are the perfect sweet to get your Christmas spirit started! Let’s see how you make them:
- Combine 1¼ cups of all-purpose flour, ½ cup ghee (or good quality unflavored oil), ½ cup Semolina (sojee or rawa), ½ cup coconut milk, ¼ cup powdered sugar, a pinch of salt, and an egg, until you get your dough.
- You can choose to leave this dough colorless or add some food coloring.
- Using a comb or fork, carve the dough into kulkuls. Place aside.
- Combine 1 cup water with 1 1/8 cups of sugar to make sugar syrup.
- While the syrup cools, fry your kulkuls in 1½ + 1 tbsp of ghee.
After they’re ready, put them in the sugar syrup or pour the syrup over them and enjoy this Christmassy delight!
